The air is getting crisp. The leaves are starting to change. Suddenly pumpkin flavored items are everywhere. Fall is just about here, and it’s the perfect time to start thinking of some fun fall activities. If you have a senior parent who loves the fall, any of these activities would be a lot of fun for them. Or, if you’re a senior who wants to get out and enjoy the crisp fall weather, and you have in-home care, you can enjoy any of these great fall activities with a caregiver:
Haunted Hayride
The best haunted hayrides are at night, but seniors with in-home care can have a caregiver drive them to the haunted hayride. Usually these rides are family friendly and have some easy wholesome scares. It’s worth some scares to get a fun horse drawn hayride through the autumn wood and fields. A regular hayride without the scares is also a lot of fun for seniors, who can climb into a wagon and sit in a wagon for a period.
Leaf Viewing Train Ride
If your senior loved one lives in an area where the fall foliage is something that’s impressive, a leaf viewing train ride can be a great way to enjoy it. Check with local train companies to see what their fall schedules are. In general, the smallest train lines have special routes that show off the fall foliage all through the state. Meanwhile, seniors and their families can take in the views, have hot cider or seasonal drinks, and enjoy the stunning fall colors.
Cider Mill Visit
Who doesn’t love some fresh apple cider? Most cider mills are open to the public during the fall. You and your senior loved one can go for a tour to see apple cider being made and sample some fresh cider. There are also usually fresh homemade baked goods, apple orchards that you can explore, and lots of other farm style activities to enjoy. Don’t forget to bring home some seasonal treats, like apple butter, apple pies, and of course fresh apples, straight from the orchard.
Pumpkin Patch
You may have wonderful memories of your senior parent taking you to the pumpkin patch when you were little. Now it’s your turn to take them. If you have small kids, you can take everyone in the family to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins for the season. There may be pumpkin carving demonstrations and contests. In contrast, there may be a petting zoo area with goats and farm animals that your senior parent or your kids can feed and pet. Even more activities that make the fall special.
Just remember, if you are taking your senior loved one to an outdoor activity in the fall, you should bring an extra jacket or other warm clothing for your senior parent. The weather can turn pretty quickly in the fall, and if it gets cold or rainy, you should have a jacket or other warm clothing with you in case your senior parent gets cold.
